NICK PETTERSSEN

Playground Director and Founder

Certifications: CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Kids, CPR

Competitive sports have always played a significant role in Nick’s life. After growing up a ski-rat at Sugarbush, his high school sports included soccer, hockey and lacrosse. He went on to enjoy a collegiate and brief professional career in volleyball. Gradually he was drawn to endurance sports: Nordic skiing, running, cycling, and triathlons. “Now CrossFit gives me something from of all these sports on a daily basis. I love CrossFit…but I still hate Fran!”  Nick enjoys sharing his passion for endurance sport training, competition and performance tactics with Confluence members, and he continues to work on developing that 11th crucial skill of fitness -- mental discipline.

When Nick is not at the gym dreaming up a new Confluence experience or hammering out a Workout of the Day, you’ll find him outside enjoying a day of Nordic skiing or cycling, or spending time with his family at home in Plainfield.

Training Mantra - Start hard, go harder, finish with everything you have.

LISA LAVOIE

Director of CrossFit

Certifications:  CrossFit Level 1, CrossFit Rowing, First Aid, CPR

Lisa was introduced to CrossFit by a friend over 5 years ago.  She and her husband were avid bikers and skiers and they fell in love with this style workout immediately. “CrossFit became our stick/mud season training for biking and skiing. We set up a gym in our basement and put it to good use.”  Lisa has been working at The Confluence since it opened in 2009.   Lisa is excellent at demonstrating various skills and instructing members on executing the workout of the day and recovering from the workout of the day.”

Lisa spends most of her time with her husband and three year old daughter.

Lisa also likes to mountain bike, tele ski, Nordic ski, and swim whenever she can fit it in.

SHANNON LEWIS

Staff Trainer

Certifications:  CrossFit Level 1, AFAA, CPR

Shannon was introduced to CrossFit by a good friend 4 years ago and has been hooked ever since. He attempted the CrossFit main web site workouts alone for about a year until he heard of a CrossFit gym coming to the area.  When The Confluence opened Shannon was able to earn his CrossFit Teaching Certification. Shannon is committed to helping others reach their fitness goals: “I enjoy helping members with their form and technique.  It is my promise to every member that I will do my very best to make sure they obtain their goals and have a bunch of fun getting there.”

When Shannon is not watching/studying/doing CrossFit workouts you can find him swimming, hiking with his dogs, running an occasional 5K, and spending time with family and friends. He has challenged himself by participating in Spartan Races and was recently crowned the “Beast of Barre” at the Barre Fitness Festival.

Work hard. Play hard. Stay strong.

DON CHANDLER

Staff Trainer

Don brings a lifelong interest and aptitude for athletics to The Confluence. “CrossFit combines all the skills and movements I have used in every sport I've ever played.  It has improved my overall physical health more than any other training program or sport.”  Don shows his passion for CrossFit during every workout, motivating members to reach their capacity and push beyond their limits.

When you ask Don what he likes to do for fun, his response is CrossFit! He loves to play with his kids and he also enjoys traveling, playing soccer, surfing, and snowboarding.

ALAN CARTER

Staff Trainer

Alan credits CrossFit workouts not only for improving strength but also for helping to target and improve on functional movement. He turned to CrossFit in 2010 while preparing a training strategy for a search and rescue season in Colorado. These workouts were a fresh and more comprehensive alternative to long, uninspiring sessions of cardio and strength training. “CrossFit allowed me to perform my regular activities at a higher intensity. I’d always get stronger with my past workouts but stronger only for those specific workouts. It didn’t help me carry a 60 pound pack full of rescue gear with more efficiency. CrossFit helps me do that.”

Alan enjoys climbing rock and ice but recently he dedicated his free time to developing and building our FitPark.  Alan, along with a group of CrossFit volunteers, built this new ‘playground’ for the whole community to enjoy.  The FitPark offers an intense outdoor workout combining elements from CrossFit, Strong Man Competitions, and Parkour.

JILL MAZZA OLSON

Staff Trainer

Jill will readily admit that she did not consider herself an athlete until she was well into her 30’s so as an instructor she especially enjoys helping members feel good about their individual progress rather than how they stack up against the others.  Jill has found that CrossFit never gets boring and because every workout is different she stays motivated to attend class.  “I can see and feel that these workouts make a difference. I’ve never been stronger. And, I love the community here at The Confluence.”

Jill has a family, a busy job, and a passion for mountain biking. She enjoys cross country skiing and dancing, especially the two-step and swing. In quieter moments you can find her reading or knitting. Jill plans on pursuing a certification in CrossFit Endurance.

"The most important key to achieving great success is to decide

upon your goal and launch, get started, take action, move."

He gets satisfaction from seeing members working hard and getting stronger: “I specialize in functional strength movements and body weight exercises. My training philosophy is to train smart, stay consistent, get strong, and be healthy.”

JONAH NEALE

Staff Trainer

Certifications: CrossFit Level 1

Jonah believes in the transformative power of CrossFit. He left the fitness community for a long time due to negative leadership but he has found encouragement of a different kind at The Confluence.  He’s learned that CrossFit workouts are adjustable so, whatever your ability, you can make the workout what you want it to be.  He teaches with a philosophy that positive encouragement can push members to reach their own potential:  “Crest the rise. Don’t stop right before the top, but push through, and you might find what you lost. “

Jonah also enjoys playing basketball, hiking, biking, playing music and the theatre.

TYLER STRANGE

 Staff Trainer

Certifications: CrossFit Level 1

Tyler was looking for more physical activity in his life when he discovered CrossFit at The Confluence: “I had always been drawn to activities that involved movement like mountain biking, rock climbing, dancing – and found that CrossFit fit right into my pattern.” Tyler also found a deep sense of community at The Confluence that keeps him engaged and interested far beyond any other fitness programs he has tried. Tyler recently earned his Level 1 Certification and finds his strength in breaking down movements and teaching the fundamentals.

Tyler started rock climbing when he was 15 and worked as a guide and instructor for 5 years. He spends most of his free time with his family playing sports, hiking, and cooking.
