What Is CrossFit?

By Confluence - Posted on 29 September 2009

CrossFit is a method of training founded in the roots of human movement and athletics. CrossFit eliminates the expensive machines and elaborate equipment commonly found in health clubs in favor of bodyweight exercises, gymnastics, Olympic weightlifting and sports like running, rowing and skiing. By employing short duration and high intensity workouts while fostering a fun, social and supportive environment, CrossFit trains people of all ages and ability levels to achieve very high levels of whole-body, functional fitness.

BE NOT AFRAID! Show up as you are... REALLY! We’ll make you better. All of our sessions consist of functional movements, which are natural, scalable, modifiable, or have substitutions. This means that everyone regardless of age, gender, fitness level, etc. can have fun exercising together.

The basic tenets of CrossFit can be summed up as constantly varied functional movements performed at high intensity. Let's break that down a bit further...

Constantly Varied - There is a different workout to perform EVERY DAY. This is referred to as the Workout of the Day or W.O.D. Routine is the enemy - variety works!

Functional Movements - These may include multiple variations of Gymnastic Exercises, Bodyweight Calisthenics, Plyometrics, Olympic Weightlifting, and Metabolic (Cardiovascular) Conditioning. We concentrate on complex, full-body movements that are athletic in nature.

High Intensity - Simply put, most of the CrossFit exercises/movements require a consistent, coordinated, powerful execution of force (Power = Work÷Time).
